I am currently in Bali, Indonesia. In order to make sure I can enjoy my travels, I need to stay healthy. For the last few months, I have been struggling with my health due to IBS. So staying healthy for me is easier said than done, especially when traveling in Asia. The long flight, the food, water, and the heat are some of the things you need to take into consideration when trying to maintain your health.
In this post, I will show you what I do to stay healthy during my travels so that hopefully you can do the same.
MOST IMPORTANT: STAY HYDRATED
My number one tip is to bring a reusable water bottle. Leave it empty when you leave home and only fill it up once you have passed customs. I still had about 2 sips of water left in the bottle, thinking it was no big deal, but the bottle must be completely empty when going through the x-ray machine.
TOP TIP: make sure your bottle is empty when going through customs.
During the flight make sure you drink lots of water. We all know how dehydrating flights are, so in order to stay in the best health, drink lots of water during your flight.
Then whilst doing sightseeing, make sure to also bring the bottle and keep topping it up. Now, since I am in Indonesia, it is recommended that I do not drink tap water since its quality is questionable. So, I buy bottles of water in a shop across the road from the hotel and use those to top up my bottle.
When you are traveling, please make sure you check whether it is safe to drink the tap water or not. If the quality of the water is questionable, then I suggest that you do NOT risk it, and just buy bottled water in shops. Often when traveling it is better to be safe than to be sorry the next day.
Remeber that during the flight you have to get up and move around for a bit or do leg exercises in the chair if there is enough space. This in order to keep your blood circulation properly. Especially during long-haul flights, you have a risk of developing a blood clot, which can be lethal.
During the flight walk up and down the aisle at least once every hour if you can – getting an aisle seat which will make this more convenient.
During holidays you are often inclined to eat junk food for most of your meals. I have no problems with that, but you should eat at least 1 healthy meal a day.
when traveling to exotic places the first instinct is to try every new food we see. Obviously, you should try the local food while you’re traveling, but try to balance out rich meals with fruits, vegetables, and other high nutrient foods. This will help you avoid getting sick. (and maybe not pound on the weight as much)
I find that breakfast is often the easiest way to get some of your nutrients in before the day ahead. Get your 2 pieces of fruit in early, at the start of the day so you don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the day. I often eat some fruit and toast with eggs. Then either at lunch or dinner, I will do my best to have vegetable incorporated into my meals.
WALKING IS THE BEST TRAVEL WORKOUT
Traveling involves a lot of walking but lets’ face it, most of us take an Uber or taxi to get to our new destinations quicker these days. It’s all well and dandy to do that, but next time you’re traveling, plan in some extra time to walk to your new hotel or attraction instead of hopping in a taxi.
A 15-minute walk instead of a 5-minute taxi ride won’t hurt your schedule that much, and you’ll get to see and experience your destination a lot more.
This will help you stay healthier and might stop a bit of the weight gain in the process.
I always try to walk to the supermarket, to the local restaurants and sights if possible. This way I can see more of my surroundings as well as getting some exercise in. Win-Win.
You don’t have to go out every single day! Its ok to stay in the hotel for 1-2 days and just relax. Often on holiday people think they have to go out and do something every day, but that is not the case. It is also important to slow down and just take a few days for yourself and de-wind. Often, once you have slowed down and relaxed, you realize how much you needed it. If you keep on ‘running around’ you will wear yourself down, I mean that’s what being on holiday is for right? To slow down, enjoy life…. refresh etc
Stop, read a book, swim, sunbathe and just let yourself relax.
It can be easy to take sanitation for granted in some parts of the world, but no matter where you are, you’ll stay so much healthier by keeping clean. Wash those hands! Wash your clothes! Avoid dodgy food situations. Take hand sanitizer with you… EVERYWHERE!
It sounds like overkill, but new countries come with new germs that you are not accustomed to yet. Therefore you should protect yourself and prevent those pesky germs from ruining your trip.
Noting better to improve and maintain your health by getting some fresh air.

It’s impossible to underestimate how important it is to get enough sleep while traveling. Try to keep a decent rhythm and make sure you get plenty of sleep, once again YOU ARE ON HOLIDAY so having the odd sleep in will definitely do you a world of good.
Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.
STICK TO YOUR ROUTINES
Just because you’re not at home doesn’t mean you should neglect your daily routines. If there’s something that makes you feel better (Meditating, going for a run, exercising, swimming etc) Then make sure you continue to do that. Your body is used to it and will crave it.
Making yourself a priority is important, even on vacation. Vacations can be stressful, so take the time to de-stress after a long day of exploring, sightseeing and just general flippin excitement.
