SYDNEY’S MILLION DOLLAR VIEW | OBSERVATORY HILL AT NIGHT

SYDNEY’S MILLION DOLLAR VIEW | OBSERVATORY HILL AT NIGHT

For a park with a million dollar view, it’s hard to go past the one on Observatory Hill. The park offers sweeping, panoramic views of Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge right in the city center. Which sounds like the perfect night out for me and my trusty camera.

So on a cold summers evening (Sydney, what the heck are you doing), I went to Observatory Hill for a sunset and night shoot.

In his post, I will show you some of my best shots as well as some advice on what works and what does not work.

SUNSET MISERY

My initial plan was to go to Observatory Hill to take some swanky sunset shots, thinking it would look amazing from that point. I was wrong. I don’t know if the sunset itself was just a bit crappy or whether it is just not a good spot in general (I think the second is the latter, unfortunately)

If you just want to see a sunset they yeah, you can go to Observatory Hill. But even then I suggest you either go to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Milsons Point or Kirribilli.

AFTER DARK

However, after dark, this place is simply A-mazing. Especially from the Nordern end of the park, you have some pretty wicked views of Dawes Point, the Harbour and even Luna Park on the other side of the harbour.  I specially love the streets with the light trail in them and the beautiful bridge in the back. Just too beautiful.

Because it was Sunday evening there was not a whole lot of traffic, so it was difficult to get a cool light trail on the streets below the park. I got a few cool pictures though and it really brings it alive, don’t you think?

My favorite picture of the night must be my main blog photo. I love the vibrant colors and the clear light trails of cars in that picture.

These pictures where taken with the following equipment:

  • Canon EDS 600D
  • Tamron Aspherical LD XR DiII
  • Samyang Wide Angle 14 mm
  • Tripod

My camara setting where as follows:

  • Manual
  • 30 seconds exposure
  • F5.6
  • ISO 100
