SWIMMING WITH THE PIGS | PIG ISLAND

Pig Island in the Bahama's

If you are travel blogger, lifestyle blogger, an Instagram influencer, vlogger or travel fanatic you must have seen those amazing photos of people swimming and chilling with pigs on a tropical island. I know I have seen many of those, wishing I was there. Some travel friends of him have been traveling the world lately and were incredibly lucky to have actually done this and were too kind to help me compile this post for you guys.

So if you are wanting to go swim with these adorable piggy’s then read on. I will show you where to go, what to do and which is the best spot to go to.

LOCATIONS

There are several locations throughout the Bahama’s where you can swim with pigs and give them a snack.

The most famous and popular location has to be ‘Pig beach’ near Staniel Cay, both part of the Exuma Islands of the Bahamas. The island where the pigs live is uninhabited and is called Big Major Cay also known as Pig Beach or Pig Island. (The closest island where you can stay is Staniel Cay and then you can take a boat excursion to the Island)

There is also a very small island in Abacos near Green Turtle Cay that has a smaller population of pigs.

If you are in the Caribbean, you could check out Porto Marie in Curacao. This island has a small population of pigs as well.

In this post, I will give you information on Pig Island, as my friends visited that particular island when they were in the Bahama’s.

GETTING TO PIG ISLAND

From Staniel Cay you can take a boat tour and set out on a swim with pigs’ excursion. Underneath are a couple of options: (I do not get any commission, I just looked up some cool tours to help you out):

  • Full-Day Small-Group Tour to Pig Beach by Powerboat |
Cruise off the coast of Nassau and visit five islands in one day on this powerboat tour of the Bahamas, a great choice for first-time visitors and nature lovers. See Bahamian rock iguanas, splash around with swimming pigs, and swim with sharks. Then take a water sightseeing tour of the Exumas, an archipelago of 365 tiny islands and cays.
  • Famous Swimming Pigs Tour Bahamas |
A full-Day Powerboat to Exuma from Nassau. Experience the highlights of the Bahamas in one day on this powerboat tour from Nassau, a great choice for nature lovers and first-time visitors. Board a 39-foot (12-meter) powerboat and take a water sightseeing tour of the Exumas, stopping to swim with pigs at Pig Beach, feed Bahamian rock iguanas, swim with sharks, and visit a hidden beach. Lunch at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club is also included.
  • Rent your own boat.
If you are traveling in a group then you can rent a small boat with a ‘captain’ for a day. This costs between $600 and $ 800,-. So if you have a couple of mates, this will be the cheapest alternative.

The excursions are pretty expensive, but they offer more than just swimming with pigs. It is up to you to decide if it is worth the money. A Pig Island excursion from Nassau allows you to visit the Swimming Pigs and float alongside them in the turquoise Bahamian ocean (fun!).

SWIMMING WITH PIGS EXCURSION

The pigs are very playful, sweet and some will swim up to the boat to grab some food of you. Our ‘Captain’ brought lots of food scraps like bread, pancakes and several different types of fruit.  Because they have a pretty friendly nature, the pigs are happily awaiting their food and did not seem aggressive towards any people.

Once you are out of food, most of them will disperse into the bushes back into the shade. Some hang around in the hopes of finding more food or they take a quick dip in the stunning ocean. You can calmly chill next to them, they don’t mind.

I have the same opinion that some people do that being on the island is bad for the pigs. Whilst, yes this is not their natural habitat (They got dropped here) They often get fed and there are loads of shade for them underneath the trees. I think a lot of pigs have it a lot worse and they all seemed in good health!

You’ll probably only want to spend half an hour on Pig Beach because once you run out of food, the pigs will want nothing to do with you. There is much else to see on the island, so once you get your shots and you are out of food you could head back out.

If you have hired a boat for the day then make sure that your captain knows some good snorkeling spots. There are stingray and shark nurseries across the cays along with tropical fish and sea turtles throughout the sea. You don’t want to miss an opportunity like that!

All in all, yes this is a pretty expensive trip, but If you are in it for the gram or blogging then yeah it’s worth it. If you just want to feed a pig, then maybe head to the local zoo and pet one there. Now saying that, If I were ever in the area I would probably want to go see them because it is a pretty cool thing to see + obviously there is a beautiful beach as well. So it is completely up to you and your budget for your holiday.
