Last week I wrote an extensive post on how I have set up Bondi to Basic. In 7 easy steps, I was able to create my own personal blog. The very last step of that post was that you should create your own logo, header, and graphics.

This is important for a few reasons. Firstly, you want to be unique and by having your own graphics and artwork is one simple way of standing out. Also, people need to recognize your brand, and one simple way of doing that is by creating a template graphic for your blogs.

In this blog post, I will show you how you can make your very own blog graphics to start setting yourself apart from other bloggers.

I use Canvas for my blog graphics. They offer a free site with a ton of free templates that you can amend and completely make your own.

So let’s start by creating a blog graphic from scratch.

When you open Canva, you will see this section on the top.

These are the most used graphics. I personally use a larger format for my main graphic.

If you want to upload pictures on Facebook for example, then you should use the Facebook post, same for Twitter and Google +. Use the different sizes for the different media. They are specifically designed for those platforms and are optimized to work best.

I have found that on my blog the ‘Pinterest size’ works best. Click on the + MORE option on the right. Under the Social Media Posts section, you will see a Pinterest Graphic option.

This graphic is 735 X 1102 PX

After clicking on the image you should see a blank canvas, which looks like this.

Search: You can look for free and paid illustrations. They offer lots of great and high-quality free pictures and much more.

Layouts: You also have the option of picking a ready-made layout if you find something that you already like. Just choose from the Layout tab on the left.

Elements: If you want to be able to customize your graphics, then you can select from Canva’s wide variety of images. Click on the Elements tab on the left side of your screen and then select Free Photos. Also note that there are features on Canva that can be purchased, but if you’re starting out, you can absolutely stick with the free options!

Text: Here you will find a selection of different fonts.

Background; here you can find different background options like different colors, photos or illustrations.

Uploads: You can use your own photos by clicking on the uploads tab on the left side of the screen. Here you can locate and upload your desired photo.

This is all the basics that you need to know about using Canva. Underneath I will show you step-by-step how I have created the graphic for his blog post. You can follow these steps if you are still unsure of how to use the site.

When I first set up my blog I came up with my own personal branding.
I have 3 main subjects that I blog about.

  1. Lifestyle
  2. Travel
  3. Blogging

For each of these categories, I came up with a different main graphic. What the feel of the graphic should be, what type of pictures I should use, what colours I should use and what type of text.

I also decided that I did not want my blog to be ‘too busy’, so, for example, my travel blog posts will not have lettering in them, only on my Pinterest graphics. These are just some things that you should think about and implement on your blog as well.

Since this post which will fall under the blogging category, I have a certain style that I want to use. (Please do not copy me, but come up with your style and branding) but:

  1. Either 1-2 hight quality pictures
Either taken by myself or from a copyright free site.
  2. Text or box in the color: ffcc9f
  3. Letter type Libre Bakersfield and Montserrat Light

Now let’s create a graphic with these details in mind.

  2. GO TO MORE

Choose a grid you like best. You can choose as many grids as you like. For me, I personally like the 2 grids for this blog post.

I had already searched for some copyright free images from and I have uploaded them by dragging them into the website. I can’t show you how to do that cause it will show you a lot of my upcoming projects.

When I dragged the images into the template this is what it looked like.

Quick tip:
Choose pictures that compliment each other (If you choose 2 or more)
If you look at my pictures you can see that both of them have a soft pink color in them. This combines the pictures together even though they are different.

The last step is to add some text to this picture. Without text, people will have no idea what the blog post will be about. (Think Pinterest sharing, its needs a headline that people will want to click on)

There are a TON of great template texts, but I ‘took’ mine from a graphic template. Schermafbeelding 2018-04-22 om 13.09.00.png

As for my branding, I want to use my ‘preferred’ color in pretty much all the images that I use, so I changed the background to ‘my’ color and just amended the text to fit my blog post.

So from this

To this:

If you click on the text or on the white background you can change the color. You will have some standard options that will pop up, or you can add your own color by clicking on the + sign.

and voila, that’s my end graphic for this post. I think its simple but it looks good (I think it does at least)

I hope these tips have helped you to create amazing graphics as well. If you have any more questions please leave a comment underneath and I will try to help you.
