A SUMMER HOLIDAY ON LANZAROTE | CANARY ISLANDS, SPAIN

Guide to Lanarote

What is better than hopping on a plane and a couple of hours later you end up on a volcanic island with some unique ‘moon-like’ landscape, blissful weather and cool beaches.

This is exactly what I did during a trip to Europe last year.

Lanzarote (Spain) is one of the Canary Islands off the coast of West Africa is known for its year-round warm weather, beaches, and volcanic landscape.  Here is what I did during my holiday there.

LANZAROTE | THE BASICS

Lanzarote is situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa, the most easterly of the Canary Islands and one of the smallest. The island is, however, part of Spain and is a popular tourist destination, with its all-year-round sunshine, beautiful beaches, and stunning national parks.

Lanzarote is a volcanic island, but it hasn’t had an eruption since 1824 (phew). Its status is classed as historical and therefore dormant, although you can feel the heat under the surface at Timanfaya.

A flight from the Netherlands is just over 6 and a half hours and cost around $ 400,- AUD.

As the Canary Islands are part of Spain’s territory, so the official language spoken is …….Spanish. However, it’s an incredibly popular holiday destination, so you’ll be able to get by with no problems if you’re not fluent in Spanish, as most people in the tourist areas will be able to speak good English.

Lanzarote, just like the rest of the Canary Islands, is a year-round holiday destination. Apparently a winters day there can be compared to a standard summers day in England. So do the math….so something like that.

FUN THINGS TO DO

One thing the Spanish love to do is to go on a strike. So, it might happen that whilst you are on the island, a couple of their mayor Attractions or National Parks are closed.

This was the case when I was there! Big booooh

But here are some of the sights that I was able to see and enjoy.

LA GERIA

la geria lanzarote

La Geria is the wine region from Lanzarote. If you have been to any wine region pretty much anywhere in the world, you will envision lush green fields filled with grape trees and green pastures then you are in for a bit of a shock. Since Lanzarote is a volcanic island the landscape is a tad bit different then what you are used to.

In Geria, rolling hills have been replaced with black volcanic sand as far as the eyes can see. The grape bushes can’t grow ‘up’ because of the strong winds, so they grow close to the grounds only. They are protected from strong coastal winds by semi-circular stone walls known as zocos or abrigos, just to top off on its uniqueness.

There are many wineries that you can stop at, taste their wines and of course buy a bottle or 2.

HARIA

Haria is a picturesque village, known as the ‘Valley of the thousand palms’. It is also known for its Saturday market (Saturday Haria market). Hundreds of stalls with traditional Spanish food, souvenirs, clothing and much much more.  There is a lot of handmade stuff that won’t break the bank, which makes for a fun shopping trip.

We wandered around this market for just under 2 hours. Enjoying some delicious Churro’s whilst shopping for souvenirs.

The town itself is very cute and typical Spanish and is really nice to wander around for a bit. The sun was pretty harsh that day but it didn’t tamper our spirits.

Haria is not a town that will keep you entertained for hours on end. But the Saturday market is a perfect excuse to make a pit stop at this village.

Parking during the market is paid.

COSTA TEGUISE

A lovely spot to snorkel. Came here a couple of times to snorkel. It is a tad annoying getting into the water as you have to climb over some very slippery and spiky rocks. But once you’re in its lovely.

Don’t expect the same beautiful fish as in the Caribbean or at the Great Barrier Reef. But it is still very entertaining and cute.

LOS HERVIDEROS

The sheer power of the waves crashing into the volcanic shoreline is a must-see! Amazing forces of nature are visibly at work here, even with only a little wind, the waves are super impressive! It is one of the spots where the hot lava from the volcano met up with the cold rough sea.

Definitely worth a visit, especially with all the other nearby attractions. Plus it’s FREE, and the site is surprisingly accessible. Be careful with young kids and the elderly who might not be stable on their feet. The footpath is pretty rough and there are virtually no barriers. So, when you are a bit unstable on your feet or have weak ankles, do be aware! One can easily tip over the edge.

I think I spend about 1 hour here taking lots of photos and enjoying the waves splashing onto the rocks. It was reasonably quiet, so we got to do our thing without having hundreds of other tourist trying to take the same photo.

PLAYA HONDA

Playa Honda isn’t your typical resort town, but it is a pretty large town, with a fabulous beach and excellent shopping. This town is most famous for its plane spotting.  You can get very close to the runway of the local airport and take some amazing pictures. There aren’t many places in the world where you can get as close to a busy, live runway.

I did not get too close to myself because we parked in the wrong spot. We ended up having to walk quite a bit. We got hungry, thirsty and hot so after a while, we decided to go back to our hotel and chill at the pool. If you google plane spotting Lanzarote you will see quite a few cool pics.

There were also some cool boats on the shore. I don’t know why, but I loved photographing these.
